In Cartagena, a coastal city, there are numerous beach choices available, both within the city itself and on the nearby islands. However, if you are specifically seeking pristine white sands and turquoise waters, the city beaches may not be the ideal choice. This is due to a historical event where a river mouth was opened to connect with the sea, resulting in sedimentation that affects the clarity of the water.
The other most popular option used by tourists to enjoy a day at the beach are the nearby islands:
Tierra Bomba is the closest island to Cartagena (15 minutes away by boat only). located to the south of the urban area of Cartagena and to the north of Baru Island, covering an approximate area of 20 square kilometers. The island is adorned with forts that were built during the Spanish colonial period. It is also home to a vibrant community of Afro-descendants. Moreover, Tierra Bomba boasts good beach clubs that offer enjoyable day trips for visitors.
Baru Island is 45 minutes by boat from Cartagena and can also be reached by car from Cartagena (60 minutes approx). It is home to Colombia’s national aviary, there are accommodations for all budgets and also places on the beaches for day stays, the most famous for this being Playa Blanca and playa tranquila.
The Rosario Islands are arguably the most stunning archipelago, located just an hour away from Cartagena by boat. Comprising 28 islands, Isla Grande is the largest and most frequented. Visitors can enjoy snorkeling in the reef areas or diving in other spots. The islands offer a variety of experiences, such as lively party clubs and serene spots for relaxation with all-inclusive packages. Private islands with clubs and yachts for transportation are also available for those seeking exclusivity.
